The Elk County Treasurer's position is a four year elected position. The Treasurer serves as custodian of county funds. The Treasurer's Office receives and accounts for all money due or accruing to the county and is responsible for investing idle funds. By statue the Treasurer serves as a member of the Salary board, Retirement Board, the Record Storage Committee and the Prison Board.
The Treasurer is the Tax Collector of the County Hotel Room Rental Tax.
By statue the Treasurer serves as an Agent for the Commonwealth. As an agent, the County Treasurer is responsible for issuing hunting, fishing, dog license and temporary boat registrations. Through the Department of Revenue the small games of chance and bingo licenses are issued by the Treasurer's Office. Through the Pennsylvania State Police sporting gun permits are issued by the Treasurer's Office. Monthly reporting is made to each state agency.
Peggy served as a clerk for the Treasurer's Office from 1982 - 1985 She was appointed Deputy Treasurer in 1986 and was commissioned Treasurer by Governor Robert P. Casey in 1987. She won election to the office in 1988. She is currently serving her sixth term.
Prior to serving the County of Elk Peggy was a licensed insurance
agent.
She is a board member and treasurer for the Elk County Crime Stoppers and serves on the
governing board of the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union.
Peggy is a founding member of the Elk County Women's Association.
She enjoys Yoga, Pilates, biking, walking and shopping with her granddaughter Nichole.
Peggy is married to Carl "Spike" Schneider and has two sons Martin and Bryan.
